Accessibility Features

   Wheelchair  Ramp
We welcome people with disabilities because we know they enrich our world!  Please contact us via phone or email to let us know your specific needs and learn how best to support you during a visit.

Highland Lake Resort was built in 1950 and the new owners purchased in 2018.  While the property is far from optimum accessibility, there were some accessibility features in place. We have added and enhanced some accessibility features and we are committed to strengthening structures and polices for greater inclusion.  We will provide as detailed information as possible for guests to determine if our property is suitable for a comfortable stay regardless of physical abilities.

Our current accessibility features include:
  • While we are not a pet friendly resort, service animals for individuals with disabilities are always welcome provided guests inform Highland Lake Resort upon booking.

  • Our most accessible room we labeled: ADA Efficiency, 2 Queen Bed Room:  This Efficiency Room in the lower units, has with two queen pillow-top beds and a full bath (photos below).  Accessibility features of this room include a wheelchair ramp from the lower parking lot to the deck.  Guests in wheelchairs have stayed in this room in the past. The entry door is 31" wide while the bathroom entry door is 29" wide.   The bathroom has a standard shower like the other efficiency units with two support bars. Other elements include hair dryer, iron and ironing board, plus a fully-equipped kitchenette with stove, oven, refrigerator, and sink. Pots, pans, plates, utensils, dish-washing soap, and dish towels are included.  This room has the option to connect to adjoining regular room through a hallway if booked together.

  • We tailored our reservation system so that reservations for our accessibility room can now be can made during the same hours and in the same manner as regular rooms by separating out the room from the other efficiency units as it was previously listed.

  • All other hotel rooms have 2-3 steps maximum to the front entry door and their are no steps inside the rooms.  All the hotel room entry doors have lever handles to assist those with arthritis and other hand mobility issues.

  • We allow individuals with mobility challenges to drive to the waterfront area and have their companions leave their vehicles by our boat ramp while enjoying the waterfront. The ground is not level but some individuals with mobility challenges have been able to navigate to a nearby picnic table to enjoy the waterfront safely. You must decide for yourselves if this is a viable option.  There are several photos of our waterfront below.

  • We installed a new wheelchair ramp to accommodate guests into our Cafe'.

Highland Lake Resort is committed to increasing our accessibility features on our website and around the grounds. We have identified some accessibility and inaccessible features  to allow guests with disabilities to determine whether our property meets their needs. We will continue to implement the relevant portions of the World Wide Web Consortium's Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 Level AA (WCAG 2.0 AA) or such other standards as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Please be aware that our efforts are ongoing. You may call us at (207) 647-5301 or email us at info@highlandlakeresort.com with questions or concerns regarding ADA accessibility issues, including issues accessing the website or with questions regarding the accessibility of the various rooms.  And please share with us what you would like us to focus our efforts on regarding accessibility features.

At Highland Lake Resort we are personally familiar with issues such as NVLD, Arthritis, Dyslexia, Traumatic Brain Injury, Autism, Chronic Pain and others.  Our world is richer with inclusion for those with physical and neurological diversity and disabilities.  A treasured nugget from the front lines of disability advocates: Remember friends, don't "dis" my "abilities".   Blessings to all of you for your courage in navigating this world with your challenges. And may your challenges help illuminate more brightly your gifts & strengths.
