The Highland Lake Resort was originally purchased with the idea of creating the perfect location for Maine business meetings, training sessions, board retreats, and other corporate and non-profit gatherings for groups under 72.
Shortly after buying the resort in 1997, owner Woody Woodward turned the former attached restaurant (which had been destroyed by a fire in the 1970’s) into a handicap-accessible, well-appointed conference space. As a non-profit facilitator and event planner in his former life, Woody knew what was needed to make the space adaptable and convenient for all kinds of groups, and it has hosted business gatherings, government seminars, art retreats, and training sessions for many groups.
Unlike many meeting locations, the Resort allows you to bring in your own caterer, have a “pot-luck” dinner, or host a pizza party yourself. Or, we can help with food services, from a chicken BBQ, to a real “Downeast” lobster bake, to prepared picnic lunches, to formal dining. Our caterers can fix a meal to please any guest and fit any budget! If you want, you can use our waterside hibachis and stone fireplace to cook your own food. Every meal tastes better when enjoyed under the canopy of shade trees at the shoreline, with the sound of the wind whispering through the branches and the water gently lapping at the beach.
With our large lawn and waterfront area, you can hold team-building exercises (we have plenty of ideas to help) or provide a change of venue to break up your day. From regular games such as volleyball, badminton, tennis, and horseshoes, to more elaborate activities designed to promote leadership and organizational skills, we can provide a great atmosphere for your members to learn and become a team. Our indoor activities are great for bonding times after the working sessions are over, and we know of many fun activities off-site to expand their enjoyment of their day.
Resort owner Woody Woodward has had years of extensive experience coordinating New England business conferences, business meetings, and special events. With his own promotional marketing and special events agency, plus his professional and volunteer involvement with numerous non-profit groups, Woody has put together successful movie premieres, theme parties, black-tie galas, weddings, town-wide festivals, road races, and corporate promotions.
His former event company was also the first civilian agency ever hired by the U.S. Navy to promote a naval air show! Locally, he produced the highly-successful Mushers Bowl (the state’s championship sled dog races) for 3 years, the area’s first bridal fair, and was tapped by the town to chair its annual Pondicherry Days event for two years. His experience and creativity will make your event truly memorable.
